Wai Sa Phaya Mengrai
King Mengrai Festival, generally referred to as Pho Khun Mengrai Maharat Festival by the local residents, is an annual, 10-day event held from January 26 to February 4 to commemorate and to pay homage and respect to the founding father of Chiang Rai, Pho Khun Mengrai Maharat, who founded the city on January 26, 1262.
A day earlier, a separate “Buang Suang” worshipping ceremony is performed at the Ku Phra Chao Mengrai Stupa in front of Wat Ngam Muang on Doi Ngam Muang built by King Chaisongkram to contain the remains of his father, King Mengrai. The people of Chiang Rai revere King Mengrai as the founding father of Chiang Rai and pay respect by performing this ceremony annually to perpetuate the prosperity of the province and to preserve its cultural heritage. The ceremony starts at 6:00pm on January 25 with the Lord Major of Chiang Rai Municipality presiding over the event with offerings of flowers and “Bai Si” (flowers arranged in multi-layers of banana leaves) and traditional Lanna dances. The highlight of the event is to wrap new holy cloths around the stupa.
The next day, on January 26 at 8:39am, the provincial governor opens the King Mengrai Festival at Doi Ngam Muang. At the precise hour of 9:09am, the ceremony of making wishes and praying for the perpetuity and prosperity of Chiang Rai is held at the Mengrai Memorial Monument followed by a “Wai Sa” ceremony at the fair site. Then there is a flurry of activities including a fun fair at the old airport runway with various colorful parades, cultural performances, contests, and other entertainments.
