Cotton Rose or Confederate Rose
Cotton Rose is known locally as “Puttarn.” Native to southern China where it is used in herbal medicine, it is a large shrub or small multi-stemmed tree that grows to 4 meters high. Single and double flowered varieties are available; both have quite large blossoms that are 8 - 13 cm across.
It is one of the most imposing and unusual of flowering trees and because the spectacular flowers change color from pure white in the morning to pink in the afternoon, and it is a favorite landscape plant in Chiang Rai. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. After flowering, a round, hairy capsule forms which dries and releases fuzzy seeds, a trait that inspired one of the plant’s common names, Cotton Rose, as the buds resemble the boll of that famous member of the Hibiscus family.
