Butterfly Lily or Butterfly Ginger (Hedychium coronarium)
Butterfly Lily is commonly known as “Mahahong” in Thai. Also known as White Ginger and Ginger Lily, it is originally from the Himalayan region of Nepal and India. A member of the Zingiberaceae family, Hedychium coronarium is but one of 25 species of Hedychium found in Thailand. These herbaceous perennials spread by underground rhizomes, often forming dense clumps of multiple stems. Large, simple leaves are borne on either side of the thick green stems. Their flowers range in color from white to yellow, orange, salmon, and yellowish salmon. The sweet-scented, showy flowers emerge from one large bud at the tip of each un-branched stem that grows to about 1.5 meters. Each flower lasts about one day on the tree; when cut, they do not last at all.
