Mae Salong

Mae Salong

Mae Salong is a small community of former Kuomintang Army from Yunan.

The settlement is best known for its tea plantations and numerous tea shops. Mae Salong is about 80 kms north east of Chiang Rai. The town is up in the mountains at about 1800 MSL. Great views abound. The population is mostly Yunan Chinese and visitors will find plenty of Chinese temples Chinese products for sale.

The 93rd division of the anti-communist Kuomintang (KMT) fought fiercely against the communist Chinese before eventually finding asylum in Mae Salong. In the mid-1970's Mae Salong was still completely off limits to outsiders.
