Mae Salong
Mae Salong is a small community of former Kuomintang Army from Yunan. The settlement is best known for its tea plantations and numerous tea shops. Mae Salong is about 80 kms north east of Chiang Rai. The town is up in the mountains at about 1800 MSL. Great views abound. The population is mostly Yunan Chinese and visitors will find plenty of Chinese temples Chinese products for sale. The 93rd division of the anti-communist Kuomintang (KMT) fought fiercely against the communist Chinese before eventually finding asylum in Mae Salong. In the mid-1970's Mae Salong was still completely off limits to outsiders. The centre of the area is Santi Khiri. Near Mae SalongChedi Boromathat Akha and Lisu hilltribe settlements use the Mae Salong markets. The Legend Full Day Tour that includes Mae Salong is:CEI 2 : Full Day TourDoi Maeslong, Mae Sai, Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen Depart from the hotel for Doi Maeslong and visit a Kuomintang (KMT) Yunnan Chinese settlement, en route we will stop at the villages of former Yao and Akha opium planters. Afterwards, we will continue on to Mae Sai on the Myanmar border where you can enjoy shopping and see the Burmese jade, which was used to create the Emerald Buddha. After lunch, we will proceed to the infamous Golden Triangle where three countries converge. We will visit the Hall of Opium, a very interesting exhibition about the legends and history of the opium trade. Before returning to our hotel, we will visit the old temples of Chiang Saen.
